Desktop or freestanding: which do I need?

Count the people. Up to five at modest volumes, a desktop machine on a bench or cupboard does it. Beyond that, go freestanding: two to four paper drawers hold A4, A3 and letterhead side by side, and the speed goes up.

  • One to five: a desktop machine, in most cases an A4 office printer that also copies and scans.
  • Six to twenty: freestanding A3, somewhere between 25 and 35 pages a minute.
  • More than twenty: a quicker freestanding model, the kind called a commercial photocopier, usually fitted with a finisher and a large paper tray.

A big machine has to fit the lift, the door and the corner it will live in.

Which options are worth adding?

A finisher, if you staple: it staples as the pages come out, and some models also hole punch or fold booklets. A high capacity tray, if refilling paper is a daily chore: it holds a few thousand sheets. Tell us what the office produces and we configure the machine around it.

Will it fit, and how does it get in?

Plan for a machine about 60 centimetres wide and 65 to 70 deep, roughly 80 to 90 centimetres tall before the paper drawers go under it, and 75 to 90 kilograms for the body alone. So before anything is booked we ask about the stairs, the lift, the narrowest doorway and where the truck can park.

In the CBD and North Sydney that usually means a loading dock slot and a goods lift booked through building management. Business parks at Macquarie Park and Norwest often have docks and wide corridors. Industrial estates in the west and south west usually mean a roller door and plenty of room. Across a city this size, the delivery is booked to a time, not guessed around traffic. See where we deliver.

Questions

Freestanding copiers: straight answers

How much room should I leave for a freestanding copier?

About a square metre for the machine, plus space to open the front door and pull out the drawers. A finisher adds to that.

Can a copier be carried up stairs?

Most of the time. Flag any stairs when you first get in touch, and the crew comes equipped for them.
