Copier leases

Copier leasing in Sydney: how a photocopier lease really works

Yes, a lease can be arranged on a copier or an office printer, subject to approval. Below: how a lease works, what sets the monthly rate, the clauses worth reading, and why most offices end up renting instead. Lease or rent from $15 a week plus GST.

  • From $15 a week plus GST
  • Copiers and A4 printers
  • Lease or rent: you choose
  • Clauses in plain English

What actually happens on a copier lease?

The finance company pays for the copier, and you pay that back each month over an agreed term, usually three to five years. The payment depends on the copier, the length of the term and your business's approval. How it ends is written into the lease itself: give it back, upgrade, or make a residual payment and own it.

Most of our customers take a rental instead, because it finishes more simply: a newer model, or the machine goes back. Where your accountant has a preference for a lease, we set one up.

Some accountants prefer a lease. Ask for the lease and the rental figures, then compare.

Can you lease an office printer instead?

Yes, and it works just like a copier lease. An office that only ever prints A4 can often get by with a leased multifunction printer: it handles printing, copying and scanning, needs less space, and the monthly figure is usually lower than for an A3 copier.

Replacement warranty

What if it fails? We replace it. Any year of the agreement.

If a machine on our service agreement fails, we replace it. That holds for new and secondhand machines alike, and for every way of paying: rental, lease, finance or an outright purchase. The cover lasts as long as the agreement does, every year of it.

A new copier normally carries the maker's warranty for 12 months, covering hardware but not consumables. Once that year is up, the service agreement carries the cover. The full terms of the replacement warranty are written into your agreement.

What sets the monthly lease rate?

The rate comes down to the price of the copier, the number of months, and what the finance company approves. A longer term lowers each payment but adds to the total. For comparison, copiers rent from $15 a week plus GST on selected machines. Ask for one machine priced at 36, 48 and 60 months and the trade off is plain to see.

What should you check before signing a lease?

  • The total of every payment across the term, not just the monthly amount.
  • What service costs, and whether that cost can rise mid term.
  • Whether there is a minimum charge each month, and how much.
  • The end of term choices, and how much notice you must give.
  • The price of leaving before the term ends.

Fourteen clauses, explained.

Questions

Copier leasing: the short answers

Can you lease a refurbished copier?

Yes. Terms go up to 60 months, and the older the machine, the shorter the longest term on offer.

Lease or rental: is there much in it?

The big difference is the ending. Our rental ends one of two ways: you move to a newer model, or the machine goes back. Leases vary: some end with the machine going back, some with an upgrade, some with a residual to pay.

Can we lease an A4 printer rather than a copier?

Yes. The lease works the same way for an A4 multifunction printer as for an A3 copier; see the printer section above.

What is in a copier lease agreement?

It sets how many months you pay, how much each month, the ending, and the price of getting out early. Read our checklist before you sign one.
